Creating a special needs bathroom with a roll in shower was the task for this Florham Park NJ family.
The challenge was to tear out a steam shower, massive Jacuzzi tub and the rest of the bathroom to make way for a new affinity shower system. They needed to make the space easier to navigate for the family's 14 year old son and his wheelchair and the key was to make it elegant.
We raised the floor to set the stage for a barrier free environment, without any curbs or ramps make all the difference when navigating anything on wheels. There are many things to consider when setting up a shower like this such as:
- Where to locate the water controls
- Rain head for constant water flow
- Hand controls easy for the operator
- Barrier free shower
- Clearance for navigating
We also added in features found in luxury bathroom suites:
- Flip down bench made from natural wood very comfortable to sit on and adds another element of warmth
- Decorative border was lowered to a height that their son could enjoy the visual accents.
- Scalloped design in the 1/2" tempered glass curtain creates a stunning feature.
- Built-in niches
What really made the project come out perfect was a change in the middle of the project when. I had an idea reduce a hall closet by 18" which added it extra space to the shower, the much needed space made the use of the shower much easier to be able to roll right in.
The family is filled with gratitude that we cared enough to always look for ways to improve the quality of life, this made the job!
